dear friend, dear friend,
where are you going too?
i know you’re confused,
but that doesn’t mean you should go.
i thought we’d be forever,
i thought we’d be fine,
but those childish dreams,
they never last.
well i was dying of thirst,
you did me your worst,
but now the storm has passed.
now i’ll try and move on
and this melody and song
will surely be your last.
dear lover, dear lover,
you ask why am i so blue,
but you know the truth,
and you know very well.
you know that i hurt,
you kicked me in dirt,
till i was black and blue.
now the crowd passes by
and with time i’ve lied,
that i never loved you.

these last few weeks in birmingham have become a little frustrating.
one of the main reasons i decided to change courses was because i’ve simply stopped making things and the course i was doing had no kind of creative basis which didn’t help.
over the summer i hope to end this creative drought and i am now ticking down the days until my ‘boys’ are free from the shackles of university and are ready to embark on a musical adventure. i think with anything that i create now i’m not going to try and make it adhere to a particular sound or genre in anyway, i think people should just be trying to make something honest and something that represents who you are and how you feel.
in the words of joel gion my good friends,
‘we gotta have a revolution man’
the brian jonestown massacre is one of the few modern bands i can identify with in anyway, and i love the way they talk about their music as being a revolution. i totally think a revolution needs to happen, now more than ever.
Some of the most intriguing and slightly bizarre journeys i have experienced tend to be the ones made after or during a night out. Whether it is the long, self-examining walk in the rain from a friends house or just journeying between various destinations set for the night. Something strange always seems to happen. For me walking serves a therapeutic use as well as a practical one and when traveling alone i feel i am in the best frame of mind to try and resolve ongoing issues or simply try and piece things together. However journeys at night seem to always take a different course. The darkness that the night brings offers the opportunity for madness, the city once tame and familiar in the day becomes wild and spontaneous in the night.
I really dig this, not only so that we can poke fun at our friends for ‘touching that strange mans dirty pony’ (surprisingly not a euphemism) but also because you are a part of everything you see and so your experiences will ultimately always end up effecting or altering your life in some way, even if it is miniscule. Last night was no exception. I was walking alone through Paradise Forum in the early hours of the morning when two guys caught my attention. One of them shouted “Oi mate, you are just asking to get robbed!” I paused and replied bamboozled by what he meant. What he meant was that I shouldn’t walk around with my pretty expensive phone in my hand, and he was right. I’d become so used to walking through Birmingham late at night that I no longer felt threatened by my surroundings and admittedly I probably was asking for a mugging. However the nail in the coffin was waiting for me just a few yards away in Victoria Square. As I was headed out from Paradise forum into the square I noticed an older man on the floor with a slightly younger guy pacing up and down besides him. I approached them to see that the man on the floor had been beaten up quite badly, bloodied and barely conscious I asked the man beside him what had happened. He said some guys had just beaten the older man up and he needed help. Of course I don’t know who was in the right or wrong or whether it was just a random attack but it made me think. The rest of the walk home was completed in a fever of anxiety, suddenly doors seem to open and close behind you, someone gets out of a car and runs towards you with a bottle only to stop when he reaches you and continue walking normally. Alarms echo continuously around the city, all just waiting to be set off. And under the haze and confusion of darkness, alcohol and whatever else you might indulge your evenings with even the most mundane situations suddenly have the potential to turn into something sinister or bizarre.
I don’t quite know what motivated me to write this post, it was partially because I just wanted to write a new post but also because I am genuinely fascinated with the night-time and all it’s harebrained escapades. The story above is certainly not one of the strangest things to have happened to me but it was the most recent and so that’s why it was detailed.
Does anyone else have a boat load of weird night-time walking stories?

a little bit about the film dig!
this fly on the wall documentary tracks the progress of the infamous brian jonestown massacre & the dandy warhols over a seven year period. narrated by courtney taylor from the dandy warhols (who do ultimately come out of the film looking like a bunch of pompous, pretentious ‘fags’), follows the dandys rise to medium success while the brian jonestown struggle with heroin, in-fighting and a world which didn’t understand them.
admittedly there isn’t any fancy cinematography in this balls-to-the-wall documentary but what do you get is a gritty and real depiction of rock and roll, art and the ego-kissing that goes with all that.
after finally getting a chance to watch it last night with the mole and tash i would highly recommend the film so long as you would consider yourself one (or more) of the following;
- interested in music
- interested in film
- interested in art
- interested in drugs
- interested in life
- interested in people
… so i think that just about includes everyone.

I have been holding back on this tune for a while. I wanted to start/finish recording the guitar over easter but I couldn’t as the valves have gone on my amp and it is ridiculously noisy. I wasn’t going to post it until it was completely finished and mixed but fuck it, thought I’d put it out there anyways even though it will sound a whole lot better when done.
A special thanks to Matthew Breed who assisted on the recording of drums. Once the recording is finished i’ll be creating a video to accompany it!
